One of a kind skirt ~

Visit my shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/theKIRAkollection

So I’ve reposted this really cute and simple skirt I had for sale a while ago.  A friend of mine brought home some fabric she says was from Tahiti – oh how I wish I could take a trip there!  Her BF is from there, but anyhow, she said she didn’t know what to do with it, his mom or sister had given it to her – and being that I’d done a couple of custom things for her in the past she thought she’d give it to me.  There wasn’t a lot of the fabric, but it was an interesting print.  I just made it into a simple skirt thinking that someone might enjoy it.  It looked really good at the photo shoot, and it’s so comfy too – of course I couldn’t resist trying it on.  One of the hazards of using myself to size, I get tempted often to keep the finished products!!

By the way – I just reduced the price on the vintage yellow dress!  In case you know anyone who might be interested!  I really wish I could find it a good home!  https://www.etsy.com/listing/168757375/beautiful-vintage-yellow-peasant-dress?ref=shop_home_active_1

Why hello yellow!

I’ve posted this dress before, but I have it for sale in my Etsy shop now ( https://www.etsy.com/listing/168757375/beautiful-vintage-yellow-peasant-dress?ref=shop_home_active_3 ) and I wish I could find it a good home.  It’s one of the vintage dresses my grandma gave me that sadly don’t fit me.  I was able to find a couple of great models to take pictures in it for me and I just love the yellow!  Especially in the beach photo shoot.  If you’re interested in buying, leave me a comment! =)

Happy New Year, yes I know it’s March

2 months of 2014 have already passed me by, where they went ~ I have no idea.  It’s really kind of sad.  Time just flying by…I’ve been so busy with my 9-5 job and it’s really been affecting my home life as well as any hopes of sewing on the side.  I still have my part time work that I cram in too.  It’s been just crazy the past 6 months with no slow down in sight.  But, if you really want something, you’ve got to do it.

work you didnt do

I very well can’t be “be upset by results I don’t have with work I haven’t done”.   I just really need to get it together.  I’m determined.  It’s already the 3rd month of the year.

Skirt reconstructions…

In my last post I talked about repurposing and I’ve done a couple more upcycle projects since then.  I had a couple of skirts that I’d been holding on to for repurposing and so I just lined them and made them into simple tote bags. I love how the pockets on one of the skirts are functional for the outside of the bag as well.

Repurposed with a purpose…

I enjoy repurposing…I can’t stand to let a good piece of clothing or fabric go when I could surely see myself using it for “something” even though I may not quite know what! It ends up resulting in a lot of space being taken up by future “projects” lol. I decided I’d to get one done not too long ago with a pair of pinstriped capri’s. I get a lot of hand me downs, and I frequent area yard and garage sales. But these were really cute and sadly, did not fit me. I had high hopes to fit into them one day, but those hopes did not seem to be materializing any time soon (sigh)…so I had been wanting to make a vendor apron for a while. In my recent gift of fabric from my dear Aunt, there was a cute contrasting yellow fabric I thought would match well…so off I went.

It’s a pretty basic vendor apron. I have one large pocket, one smaller side pocket. The larger pocket has an inner zipper pocket for cash or secret stash. And then I added the contrasting pen pocket on the outside. I think it came out okay. It was my first one, and I was pretty much winging it with no pattern, just sewing and cutting and cutting and sewing. But overall, I’m happy with it. Repurposed with a purpose. I love giving new life into something that otherwise may have been wasted. =)

Pretty pink…

Pink is not usually my thing. But I was given this simple paisley looking print fabric and I had this pink tank top on hand. The goal was to make two dresses this day, but well…yah. Even though it was just a simple tube dress, I was – as usual – just dragging my behind. I don’t know what my problem is lately, seriously! Anyway, the second dress I want to make is out of this awesome stretchy striped fabric, so gotta figure that one out.

Anyhow, as I said, it was all very simple. I love using everything, so I get the long tanks – this way I can make two dresses out of them. I cut the tank top in half. I turn the bottom half around and use that as a tube dress or top, and the top piece as a tank dress or top.

Then it was just a matter of cutting the skirt part, I cut the diagonal cause I like my skirts to flare out a little rather than be fitted and straight at the bottom..(I ended up cutting a deeper diagonal than pictured, I always start off so conservatively lol..such a chicken)

Then it was just finishing the top and bottom hems, and sewing elastic to the top – and attaching it to the cut side of the tube. I then insert elastic into the already hemmed part of the tank. (Turned the bottom of the tank to the top and slid elastic into the original hem and hand sewed the hole closed). Voila!

Now I just have to get to all those projects and ideas I have piled up there on the side. And imagine, those are only the things that didnt fit into my sewing cabinet there! Yikes. Too many ideas and so little time (energy!). Until me and my sewing machine meet again…

Will be posted soon and reclassified into the FOR SALE category once I get my photo shoot done!

Asian inspired and fun zipper pouches for sale!…

I just posted these really cute zipper pouches in the Etsy shop. I honestly just needed to get a couple of small things done, because really, getting small things done helps to motivate for the bigger projects I’ve got on the back burner – don’t you agree? You gotta have the little achievements that help get you stoked to move onward to the big ones. I’ve been putting off a bunch of things, but I’ve really gotta get it together. I’m almost committing myself to a catalog/product photo shoot in June, and I’ve hardly got any “product” to shoot! I’ve got the photog, just still confirming the model. But I thought to myself, if I went so far as to commit the photographer and the model, that would kind of force me to get my $*#$^ together, and at least have a target date. Lol, kind of @ss backwards, but hey, whatever works. It’s been a challenge to say the least getting my head in the game. But it’s getting there!

A little bit of Aloha…

I don’t mind doing custom orders, I love working with customers to create their vision.  It’s a little nerve wracking (is that the word?) for me ~ It’s easier to create something, and hope you like it ~ but I do also enjoy creating something especially for someone too.  So I was happy to try and make something for someone who contacted me on Etsy  after making a previous purchase.  She wanted a simple dress, and gave me some ideas of print, color scheme, etc.  I was a little bummed at first because I couldn’t find anything similar to the print she sent me a sample of, but I just went with my gut and picked out a couple of fabrics I thought might work.  I sent the pics to her and just kind of threw in the comment “they might be a little too ‘aloha’ for you, but hey, I am in Hawaii after all, lol”…turns out she loved it, she said “I love ALoha!” haha.  Whew.  So it was no problem whipping up the dress, and she loved it.  It’s really not that big a deal local or otherwise, because if it doesn’t work out, then I’ll just list the item or use the fabric for something else, so I never pick up a fabric that I can’t see myself using for another project.  Just glad I could spread a little aloha though!

Pillows…

My sister in law told me about a new site called poshmark, I have yet to check it out, have you all heard of it?  Anyhow, she was telling me about these cute Chevron pillows she saw that she liked and the person offered them to her – or whatever it is that they do on poshmark…I guess you can buy and sell items on the site.  Anyhow, my dear SIL told me – she was thinking to herself – umn hello – my SIL can make me some of those!  Not too long ago I just made some custom pillow covers for a customer and they came out lovely!  One was a nice gray Chevron print, and the other was a teal coral print with orange piping.  She wasn’t sure about what kind of piping she wanted, but I just threw on the orange and she loved it.  I added the hidden zippers for easy removal and cleaning!  I wanted to keep them for myself, but alas – I had to give them up.  They were nice, like 22 x 22 I think.  Sooo comfy!
