Repurposed with a purpose…

I enjoy repurposing…I can’t stand to let a good piece of clothing or fabric go when I could surely see myself using it for “something” even though I may not quite know what! It ends up resulting in a lot of space being taken up by future “projects” lol. I decided I’d to get one done not too long ago with a pair of pinstriped capri’s. I get a lot of hand me downs, and I frequent area yard and garage sales. But these were really cute and sadly, did not fit me. I had high hopes to fit into them one day, but those hopes did not seem to be materializing any time soon (sigh)…so I had been wanting to make a vendor apron for a while. In my recent gift of fabric from my dear Aunt, there was a cute contrasting yellow fabric I thought would match well…so off I went.

It’s a pretty basic vendor apron. I have one large pocket, one smaller side pocket. The larger pocket has an inner zipper pocket for cash or secret stash. And then I added the contrasting pen pocket on the outside. I think it came out okay. It was my first one, and I was pretty much winging it with no pattern, just sewing and cutting and cutting and sewing. But overall, I’m happy with it. Repurposed with a purpose. I love giving new life into something that otherwise may have been wasted. =)

Pretty pink…

Pink is not usually my thing. But I was given this simple paisley looking print fabric and I had this pink tank top on hand. The goal was to make two dresses this day, but well…yah. Even though it was just a simple tube dress, I was – as usual – just dragging my behind. I don’t know what my problem is lately, seriously! Anyway, the second dress I want to make is out of this awesome stretchy striped fabric, so gotta figure that one out.

Anyhow, as I said, it was all very simple. I love using everything, so I get the long tanks – this way I can make two dresses out of them. I cut the tank top in half. I turn the bottom half around and use that as a tube dress or top, and the top piece as a tank dress or top.

Then it was just a matter of cutting the skirt part, I cut the diagonal cause I like my skirts to flare out a little rather than be fitted and straight at the bottom..(I ended up cutting a deeper diagonal than pictured, I always start off so conservatively lol..such a chicken)

Then it was just finishing the top and bottom hems, and sewing elastic to the top – and attaching it to the cut side of the tube. I then insert elastic into the already hemmed part of the tank. (Turned the bottom of the tank to the top and slid elastic into the original hem and hand sewed the hole closed). Voila!

Now I just have to get to all those projects and ideas I have piled up there on the side. And imagine, those are only the things that didnt fit into my sewing cabinet there! Yikes. Too many ideas and so little time (energy!). Until me and my sewing machine meet again…

Will be posted soon and reclassified into the FOR SALE category once I get my photo shoot done!

Asian inspired and fun zipper pouches for sale!…

I just posted these really cute zipper pouches in the Etsy shop. I honestly just needed to get a couple of small things done, because really, getting small things done helps to motivate for the bigger projects I’ve got on the back burner – don’t you agree? You gotta have the little achievements that help get you stoked to move onward to the big ones. I’ve been putting off a bunch of things, but I’ve really gotta get it together. I’m almost committing myself to a catalog/product photo shoot in June, and I’ve hardly got any “product” to shoot! I’ve got the photog, just still confirming the model. But I thought to myself, if I went so far as to commit the photographer and the model, that would kind of force me to get my $*#$^ together, and at least have a target date. Lol, kind of @ss backwards, but hey, whatever works. It’s been a challenge to say the least getting my head in the game. But it’s getting there!

Refashioned beach dress to fun everyday bag…

So I found this super cute surf brand O’Neill dress at a garage sale recently, and there were some flaws in it, but I just loved the print SOOO much, I couldn’t pass it up!  I ended up taking it apart and making a simple everyday bag out of it – and it turned out great!

I really wish that I had more fabric of this since it’s so fun, but just posted the bag to the shop.  It did have some minor flaws that I couldn’t sew around, but overall, I’m so happy with how it came out!

Simply charming…

I know a lot of people who make jewelry.  My two sisters make beautiful jewelry, and being in Hawaii there is a lot of beach glass and shell jewelry.  I wanted to try my hand at something simple, but as it turns out – it is not my thing.  I posted some very cute, sweet and simple charm necklaces in my shop for sale.  Check it out if you’re interested!  Could make a great gift too.  AND, free shipping!  Who doesn’t like anything free?  Feel free to comment if you have any questions, thanks for stopping by!

Into 2013…

www.thekirakollection.com

The holiday craft fair season has come and gone. We’re now into February and getting on into 2013. Why is the time going by at this ridiculous speed that I can’t seem to catch up with? I’m glad the holiday season is over and we had a lot of fun at the craft fair. It is always fun to hang out and check out all the passers by. Whether it was making money or spending money, we all did pretty good.

Time…

It’s so hard to get motivated sometimes…like the daily grind just really grinds you up and spits you out.  I have so many ideas and wants and goals, but at the end of the day…I can still be content with not getting to any of it, and laying in bed with my little Kira.  (Albeit, she is quite the reason why I get so tired in the first place).

I have a full time job, which thankfully, I enjoy.  Not many people I know can say that.  I also have a part time job, which I don’t enjoy quite as much and really think of it as a chore…but it brings in a little extra money for the family which is always good.  I’m a Daisy Girl Scout troop leader to eight kindergarten girls.  Coming up with activities, lessons, and badge earning interest is a lot of work for these little ones!  And I have my own small business, and even though yes, my Etsy shop sold it’s last item listed a few weeks ago…business has been steady locally and that has been keeping me busy.

(sad empty Etsy shop) www.thekirakollection.etsy.com

It makes me kind of sad though when something like my Etsy shop, and sewing things in general – when even that gets to be something like a chore.  It’s different when you make things, post things, and people buy it…than when people order custom things from you.  It’s more pressure to me.  But all in all, I do so enjoy the time I spend with my sewing machine and most especially finishing a project on my list.

If only I could find the time and energy to get motivated into actually putting more effort into it, so that it can be more than I’d hoped.  I mean, the extra money is always good – but I love getting emails from the customers.  That’s the best part.

How do you balance life?  Aside from all the above, I have a family to love and care for, a home to tend to, and hey…what about me?!!  Lol.

How time flies…
